Fielding’s Common Doctoral Framework

The doctoral programs* at Fielding are designed with a Common Doctoral Framework. This framework includes foundational courses, electives, leadership competencies, optional concentrations, a research/praxis project, and a dissertation.

Fielding’s Common Doctoral Framework creates a pathway to degree completion in 3+ years. A combination of transfer credit and documented prior learning may enable qualified candidates to enter the program with advanced standing, thereby reducing the total cost of the program.

Optional, Shared Concentrations

Students can individualize their doctoral program and expand their professional expertise by selecting one of our shared doctoral concentrations. A student enrolled in our doctoral programs may select any of our doctoral concentrations into a personalized program of study (see below). Each concentration typically includes a minimum of three tailored courses and access to a community of scholar-practitioners who are passionate about this specialized field of study.

*The shared concentrations do not apply to Fielding’s Clinical Psychology Program.

Creative Longevity and Wisdom

The goal of the doctoral concentration in Creative Longevity and Wisdom is to enhance knowledge and practice in areas concerning mid-life and older adults. The concentration brings together currents of knowledge from various fields and helps students engage with their life experiences and challenges through phenomenological writing. The study of wisdom development and creativity enhances that of the participants, so that they in turn can bring this into their research and practice. The Somatics and mindfulness aspects of enhancing longevity are encouraged through study and workshops.

Evidence Based Coaching

The doctoral concentration in Evidence Based Coaching offers an interdisciplinary approach to integrating research-based coaching theory with professional practice in organizational and individual coaching. Students are encouraged to consider how the material resonates with, challenges or adds new dimensions to their professional and personal experiences (work life, teaching and consulting, formal coaching practices, and community).

Dual Language

The Dual Language Doctoral Concentration offers an academic program to guide teachers, administrators, and scholar-leaders in examining the research, theory, and practices needed to develop effective K-12 dual language programs. Through examination of the research literature, discussion, project based learning, and reflection students will gain the knowledge base and practices needed to promote bilingualism, biliteracy, and cross-cultural competency.

Sustainability Leadership

The world faces many challenges today—growing inequality, workforce exploitation, environmental destruction, resource depletion, and climate change, among others. The objective of the doctoral concentration in Sustainability Leadership is to produce leaders in businesses, nonprofits, governments, and educational institutions.

Somatics, Phenomenology and Communicative Leadership
