Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Fielding Graduate University is dedicated to providing a first-class graduate education where multiple approaches and points of view are valued and acted upon. We know that diversity, equity and inclusion drive innovative research and teaching that prepares scholar-practitioners to be agents of change, bringing to life our motto to “change the world, start with yours”.

Fielding’s DEI goals are to:

  • Build an inclusive culture, by intentionally creating a climate of inclusion and equity for all to feel welcomed.

  • Assure the intercultural and global competence of all faculty, administration and staff.

  • Increase the diversity of faculty with targeted recruitment, hiring and retention efforts.

  • Assure the presence of curricula for social/ecological justice and diversity in all programs.

  • Increase diversity of our student body, taking into account the diversity not only in the U.S. but globally as well.

On July 12, 2021, Dr. Allison Davis-White Eyes was named the new Vice President for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at Fielding Graduate University.

From Our Beginning

From its 1974 beginning, Fielding Graduate University was founded on a strong commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). With the university’s focus of providing doctoral education to mid-career adults, we offered graduate experiences specifically designed for people who had been left out of traditional education.  At that time, graduate education was primarily for the younger, relatively inexperienced male adult, usually white, who was able to forego full-time employment and to relocate his family, if he had one, for several years to pursue a PhD. In contrast, Fielding’s distributed model built on students’ professional expertise, allowing them to remain in their communities and work settings. We hired scholar-practitioner faculty who lived and worked in the communities where our students were located.

Dolores Huerta at Fielding

Legendary activist and civil rights icon Dolores Huerta drew hundreds of people from both the Fielding and Santa Barbara community on Jan. 10, 2020, when she came to Winter Session to accept the university’s Medal for Social Transformation.

“You can make a difference, but you have to speak up and you have to be ready to sacrifice,” Huerta told the sold-out crowd during a Q&A panel that included (L-R below) Santa Maria teacher Eunice Gonzalez, the daughter of farmworkers and a recent MA graduate of Brown University; Marcos Vargas, executive director of The Fund for Santa Barbara; and Eva Catalan, a youth organizer at Future Leaders of America. A Spanish-language interpreter was on hand to translate the program live, and Santa Barbara Chicano poet Miguel Cruz gave a powerful, spoken-word performance that drew a standing ovation.

Diversity, equity, and inclusion

Improving diversity, equity and inclusion is an active process that requires continuous commitment to promote collaborative learning and change through attracting, retaining, graduating, and honoring a more diverse population of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community friends. Social and ecological justice is part of our explicit commitment to understanding, analyzing, and acting to reduce inequality, oppression, and social stratification, recognizing the linkages between economic, social, and ecological justice. The university strives to ensure that DEI is embodied in all academic programs including course content, faculty, staff and student performance, assessment, and accountability. We challenge our community to think boldly and take specific actions that are realistic and measurable.
