Neurocovid: A Call to Action for Neuropsychologists

COVID-19 may lead to multiple neurological and neuropsychological complications: stroke (both ischemic and hemorrhagic), hypoxia, seizures, white matter damage, and various other forms of encephalopathy. Longitudinal studies of patients recovering from COVID-19 reveal generalized brain atrophy and inflammation, as well as focal lesions. There is also growing concern that COVID-19 infection may increase the risk of developing neurodegenerative disorders later in life. Lasting impairment of executive functions, memory, and other cognitive functions, as well as of smell and taste, have been demonstrated in recovered patients, whereas acute illness may be associated with delirium and psychosis. Even after the end of the pandemic, hundreds of thousands of individuals in the USA alone, and millions worldwide, will be afflicted with such lasting neuropsychological and neuropsychiatric sequelae of COVID-19. Neuropsychologists are uniquely qualified to play a central role in the diagnosis, counseling, and treatment of both acute and chronic neuro-COVID.
