In this webinar Dr. Lynn Harrison, MCC will describe the complex nature of abrasive leadership behavior and the specific coaching approaches that can help address this harmful and pervasive issue. The methods presented draw not only on years of experience coaching executives but the results of a recent phenomenological study of organizational leaders who formerly were perceived to be abrasive in their workplace relationships. This insight into the lived experience of those who aggress is largely missing in the research about workplace bullying and counterproductive leadership.
The study used a systems lens, illuminating not only the dispositional factors associated with abrasive patterns but the organizational practices that can play a role, creating a “perfect storm”. As this suggests, the coaching methods used in working with such clients must include a systemic perspective, addressing both the context and the needs of an individual to achieve sustained results.
About Lynn Harrison, PhD, MCC, MCEC
Dr. Lynn Harrison is an executive coach with over 25 years’ experience, including co-founding an international, franchise organization, leading at the senior management level, and providing consulting services to leadership teams and boards. She is the Vancouver-based principal of Black Tusk Leadership, recipient of four ICF Prism Awards.
Lynn has a Ph.D. in Organizational Systems, an M.A. in Applied Behavioral Science, and certifications as a Master-level Coach (MCC & MCEC), a Senior Organization Development Professional, and a Coaching Supervisor. Her dissertation research was on the phenomenon of abrasive leadership and she recently wrote a chapter in Fielding’s monograph, Innovations in Leadership Coaching (2020).
