Title: Should You Watch the Video of the Violent Arrest of Tyre Nichols? A Conversation Hosted by Media Psychologists
Speakers: Media Psychology Professors Dr. Karen Shackleford, Dr. Andres Miles-Novelo, and Dr. Brian Cutler Media Psychology Professor and Program Director

The recent violent arrest of Tyre Nichols in Memphis led to Tyre’s death, the firing and charging of multiple Memphis police offers, and nationwide protests.  The Memphis Police Department released a recording of the lethal treatment of Tyre by police officers.  The video was made widely available on media and social media and was accompanied by significant trigger warnings regarding the video’s contents.

Media Psychology Professors Karen Shackleford and Andres Miles-Novelo will host a conversation regarding how contemporary psychology addresses such topics as what motivates people to watch this distressing video, the potential effects of watching the video and others like it, and how to manage the potential stress and distress associated with watching violent and disturbing videos.  Prospective students and enrolled students are invited attend this event and join the conversation.
