Reflective Practice/Supervision

The doctoral concentration in Reflective Practice/Supervision is designed to teach students the theory of reflective practice/supervision and how to apply it to their professional work experiences in clinical, educational, administrative, or organizational systems. Students in this doctoral concentration study the multiple components of reflective practice/supervision, including developing a safe environment, establishing mutual respect, and the sharing of ideas. Students will learn about reflective practice/supervision through readings, lectures, discussion, and actively participating in individual and group projects. Through these activities, students will have the opportunity to practice reflective thinking in their work environments.

Why Reflective Practice/Supervision?

Reflective practice/supervision can be a very powerful resource in communication in organizations in education, mental health, and beyond. Reflection is a dual process of self-reflection and reflecting upon others. Reflective practice is the way in which a relationship-based approach can be implemented with integrity, morality, and ethics. In a true reflective practice individuals focus on listening skills, seeing the world through the eyes of the client, being able to empathize with that viewpoint and to respond in a non-critical, accepting manner. Reflective practice/ supervision is a tool that facilitates problem-solving in any social or organizational setting. In many other graduate programs, problem-solving is addressed by focusing on behaviors, rather than the underlying causes. Reflective practice/supervision addresses this issue, offering instead a developmentally-based, cutting-edge approach to conflict resolution.
