my story

After an injury in 2000, I had to change career paths. I had worked in human service delivery for approximately 15 years, but, unable to return to my job, I went into the field of education. I have consulted and taught students with emotional and behavior issues, as well as specific learning disabilities, and am now a school psychologist.

For me, returning to school was a dream come true. Once I left the master’s program at Jacksonville State University and obtained my Educational Specialist degree from the University of Tennessee, I did not know how I was going to return to school at my age. As I approached the age of 40, I began looking at schools offering doctoral degrees, but none were accredited with the American Psychological Association. I came across Fielding at a conference and was sold on two factors: flexibility for working adults and APA accreditation.

I have a very close family. I have been married for 19 years and have a stepson who is working on his doctorate in physical therapy. We also have a daughter in 11th grade. My mother is a psychiatric nurse superintendent, and my brother is a mechanical/industrial engineer.

Interests and Expertise

  • Children, adolescents, and adults with ADHD
  • Neuropsychological testing, IQ testing, and cognitive processing testing
  • Counseling that utilizes a cognitive behavior therapy approach
  • Neuropsychology
  • Psychopharmacology
  • Brain plasticity

My goal is to become a better scholar-practitioner through improving my writing skills and learning as much as I can from the wonderful faculty that Fielding has to offer.

Why Fielding?

I had wanted to go back to school for many years, but every time I inquired about a program, I was told that I would have to quit my job and travel to Atlanta four or five days a week. I could not do that with my family responsibilities. Fielding provided me with a wonderful opportunity to return to school and keep working while attending a highly respected institution with a unique learning model. In previous graduate programs, professors wanted me to learn theory and how to apply it, but my Fielding professors ask me to conceptualize my own theories.

Advice to Peers

Prospective students should know that Fielding is unique from other schools that just have online experiences. At Fielding, you have the option of going to national sessions, engaging in group study, and attending seminars, cluster meetings, and individual meetings with professors.
