my story

For more than 40 years, I have worked in the fields of higher education and organizational development. I helped start the Austin Community College District, variously serving as an instructor, administrator, and publicly elected member of the board of trustees. I also helped found Fielding Graduate University’s School of Human & Organizational Development and have served as faculty, dean, and as a member of the board of trustees. I now serve as director of the Community College Leadership and Change concentration in Fielding’s School of Educational Leadership & Change, preparing students for numerous roles. In the field of organizational development, I have collaborated with for-profit and nonprofit groups around the globe.

I received my bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mathematics and my doctoral degree in higher education, all from Duke University. During and after my doctoral studies, I worked at the National Laboratory for Higher Education in the community college division, working with more than 50 colleges. I see myself as a scholar practitioner, blending academic work with consulting work.

I enjoy spending time with my very large, diverse extended family. I also enjoy adventure travel, gardening and landscaping, boating, water sports, and fishing. I relish any time spent outdoors.

Why Fielding?

When I discovered Fielding, I was working with a group trying to start a graduate program in organizational development. After speaking with the founders of Fielding about the idea, I was asked to join Fielding and help develop the program.

Thirty years later, I continue to be excited about this program because I engage with students, faculty, and alumni on a daily basis who are working as scholar practitioners to positively impact the world.

Advice to Prospective Students

Fielding is a place for professional adults who want to blend their academic life with their work, community life, and their practice to positively influence their organizations and communities.

Our students are co-learners with their faculty colleagues, trading a top-down model of professors telling them what they need to learn for an open dialogue.
