| Respecialization in Clinical Psychology |
PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
Each student works with the Respecialization Program Director to create
a personalized learning plan that builds upon prior learning and experience
as a foundation for acquiring the knowledge and skills necessary for productive
work as a clinical psychologist. Every effort needs to be made to match
previous coursework with the curriculum. The key elements of the program
are:
Academic work in the following areas:
PSY 704 Theories of Personality (4 units)
PSY 708 Psychopathology (4 units)
PSY 709 Legal and Ethical Bases of Practice (4 units)
PSY 710 Psychological Assessment (4 units)
PSY 711 Psychotherapy Process Research (4 units) and
PSY 712 Multicultural Psychology (4 units)
One course in an intervention-focused theoretical approach
PSY 746: Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (4 units) OR
PSY 747: Cognitive/Behavioral Psychotherapy (4 units) OR
PSY 748: Humanistic/Existential Psychotherapy (4 units) OR
PSY 749: Marriage and Family Therapy (4 units)
Recommended work (required by various jurisdictions)
PSY 745 Consultation and Supervision (2 units)
Clinical work in the following areas:
- Completion of at least 105 hours of Psychological Assessment
Labs
- Completion of at least 1,000 hours of practicum experience
- Successful passage of the Pre-Internship Evaluation
- Completion of a one-year full time or two year half-time
internship
Possible Additional areas:
Doctoral programs in non-clinical areas of psychology have non-standardized
curriculum and are likely heterogeneous. They may not include courses
required by state licensing boards. Applicants are advised to compare
their predoctoral coursework with the licensing requirements from the
jurisdictions in which they plan to seek licensure. Since state licensing
requirements vary from state to state, please refer to the Handbook on
Licensing and Credentialing at http://www.asppb.org.
You are advised to include the following courses as part of your Respecialization
work if you did not complete courses in these categories as part of your
doctoral degree:
- Developmental
- Social Psychology
- History and Systems of Psychology
- Biological Bases of Behavior
- Cognitive/Affective Bases of Behavior
Students who are enrolled in the respecialization program
also have the opportunity to elect to update their knowledge in other
areas in which they wish to extend their knowledge.

a certificate indicating that they have fulfilled the clinical psychology
components of our program.
