Welcome to the world’s first Media Psychology PhD program within a School of Psychology. This unique program supports individual strengths and interests. It values close, collegial relationships between students and faculty.
Students in the Media Psychology program are able to effectively maintain their professional careers and family responsibilities while in the program. Face-to-face contact takes place at local cluster meetings and national conferences, and structured online activities deepen the interactions between students and faculty. Upon completion, students receive a PhD in Psychology with an emphasis in Media Psychology.

Research and Psychology Core Knowledge Areas (KAs) are taught by the same faculty as our highly respected Clinical Psychology PhD program. For information regarding the EdD program in Higher Education with an emphasis in Media Studies, please visit the School of Educational Leadership, & Change. Please note: unlike our other programs, the Media Psychology PhD program is not offered to residents of the state of Ohio.
The Learning Model
Contract based In collaboration with your faculty advisor, you are required to create a Learning Plan. Within the specific guidelines of the graduation requirements, you will negotiate the means by which you will acquire the knowledge and develop the skills required for program completion.
Shaped by student responsibility and initiative With the guidance of your faculty advisor, you may propose an individualized program of study that is best suited for your learning styles. Certain KAs have a specific set of requirements, so it is important that you communicate with the faculty member at the start of each KA to establish your options.
Built on existing learning and experience Students must demonstrate competence in all specified components of the curriculum. You are encouraged to build on your strengths, and to extend yourself into areas with which you are less familiar. You will not be asked to repeat subjects you have mastered. Students may, however, be asked to demonstrate competency in a written or oral format.
Collaborative Students take responsibility for their own learning in partnership with faculty members who advise, mentor and evaluate their work. Fielding Faculty members are facilitators of learning and encourage both individual and collaborative learning activities.
Flexible Students study anywhere, anytime, and at their own pace. The Media Psychology program has no academic calendar, however, KA contracts should specify completion dates. Students have eighteen months from the recording of a KA to complete it.
