The clinical practicum is intensive, formally supervised training in the provision of direct psychological services. The goal of the practicum is to develop pre-internship level competencies and to make students desirable candidates for high-quality, competitive internships. The PhD program requires a practicum of at least 1,000 hours, including a minimum of:
The primary practicum supervisor must be a licensed, doctoral level psychologist. In addition, the majority of the supervision must be regularly scheduled, individual, face-to-face supervision and at least 15% of the practicum hours accrued at each site must be spent in either individual or group supervision. Most students begin practicum after completing at least one year of knowledge areas and Psychological Assessment Labs (PALS). During this time the cluster faculty advisor becomes familiar with the student’s needs, which informs his/her recommendation for a specific practicum site. For each 500 hours of practicum training or fraction thereof, the student must document ten clock hours of participation in practicum consultation conferences in the student's cluster or of enrollment in practicum consultation conferences at the national sessions. A complete list of graduation requirements is available within the Policy Bulletin. [Return to overview of Clinical Component] |
