The Neuropsychology post-doctoral certificate program consists of coursework in theory and clinical assessment, hands-on clinical experience and case supervision, and culminates in a professional evaluation. Find out more about the following aspects of the program:
- Theory/Foundation Courses
- Clinical Assessment Courses
- Clinical Experience (1,000 hours)
- Case Supervision (200 hours)
- Final Professional Evaluation
Theory/Foundation Courses
Within the theory/foundation courses, you draw on the latest research findings and on theoretical models of brain-behavior relationships from relevant areas in the clinical neurosciences. The curriculum provides you with a broad foundation for understanding and interpreting test results and for developing intervention and rehabilitation plans.
During each year of the program, you complete 1 neuropsychology theory/foundation course and 1 clinical assessment course.
Clinical Assessment Courses
In the clinical assessment courses, you learn how to administer, score and interpret neuropsychological tests and batteries. You also learn how to use certain intelligence tests as neuropsychological instruments. You study profiles of patients with various neuropathological disorders and learn about various rehabilitative methods and techniques appropriate for specific patient groups.
Between class cluster meetings, you complete assignments and practice test administration, scoring and interpretation. At the end of each neuropsychological assessment course, you are required to submit a professional work sample.
Clinical Experience
You conduct your 1,000-hour self-guided clinical experience in your workplace or other approved site. Up to twenty hours can be applied to any single neuropsychological case requiring clinical activities, for a minimum of at least 50 cases over the course of the program.
Case Supervision
Your 200-hour case supervision is typically obtained in a group format. You are required to present at least one full case workup for supervision each semester. A minimum of 75% of the supervision hours are obtained from your cluster faculty member, with the remaining hours obtained from guest faculty or outside supervisors that are board certified by either the American Board of Clinical Neuropsychology or the American Board of Professional Neuropsychology and approved by the faculty member.
Final Professional Evaluation
At the end of the program, you submit a written, comprehensive case study and present a final oral examination to your faculty as your final professional evaluation.
