Transformative Learning for Social Justice (TLSJ) integrates and explores the relationship between the learning we do as we make meaning of our lives and the pursuit of social justice. You study praxis, the process of putting theoretical knowledge into practice, in various contexts worldwide, including:
- Social activism
- Transformative social justice learning
- Popular education
- Community development
- Social movements
- Freirian education for critical consciousness
- Participatory research
In addition to the degree curriculum, the Transformative Learning for Social Justice Concentration curriculum consists of the following requirements:
- Knowledge Areas HOD 708, 713, 715 and 10 credits chosen from Knowledge Areas HOD 704, 706, 710, 712, 714, 716, or 721*
- Inclusion of a participatory action research project in Knowledge Areas HOD 754B and 753C that focuses on both research and social change.
- Dissertation emphasis related to the TLSJ concentration. One TLSJ faculty member must sit on the student’s dissertation committee.
*The student must assess with a TLSJ faculty member in at least two of the Knowledge Areas completed for the concentration.
