Dr. Fontaine completed his undergraduate degree in psychology at the University of Washington and his graduate work in social psychology at both Duke and the University of Western Australia, receiving his PhD from the latter in 1972. He previously has taught at Trent University in Ontario and the University of Missouri at Kansas City. He has been on the faculty of the Department of Communication at the University of Hawaii since 1982 and is also currently on the faculty of the Japan America Institute of Management Science (JAIMS) in Honolulu. He is principal consultant of his own "Strange Lands International Assignment Specialists" with over 25 years experience providing training for personnel from over 100 organizations in the Americas/Asia/Pacific region

Dr. Fontaine's primary professional interests center on the challenges of ecological change. These include coping with ecoshock, getting the job done by dealing effectively with diversity, and maintaining the motivation to continue. One major focus is on helping people and organizations deal with the new people, places, and technologies encountered on international assignments in contexts such as international business, diplomacy, foreign study, knowledge creation and transfer, immigration, justice, tourism, service delivery, and intercultural marriage. Another major focus is on helping people deal with these same challenges in rapidly changing workplaces and communities at home. More general interests include social psychology and communication and their applications to intercultural interaction, organizational change, team building, decision making, problem solving, distance learning, stress management, and the development of social support.

Interwoven with these professional interests, Dr. Fontaine's life also involves family, travel to "strange lands" everywhere and exploring the people and places there, as well as hiking, skin diving, and collecting shells and other life experiences. For more information about both his professional and personal interests--including links to his vita, publications, courses, training seminars and other resources--you are invited to visit his home page for a look and a chat.
