At the NSO, students are assigned an interim mentor and begin work on their Learning Plan—a personal map and guide through the learning process.

The Learning Plan takes previous academic accomplishments into account, as well as personal, professional, and academic goals. New students consult with faculty and advanced students to create their unique academic path. Three credits are awarded on the official transcript for completed learning plans.
