Longevity and Wisdom Initiative
Valerie Malhotra Bentz, PhD
Co-Founder: Frank Jankovitz, D.H.L.
Dr. Frank Jankovitz was a man ahead of his time. In the
mid-1960s when the eyes of the nation became fixed on youth culture and
Frank was a young man himself, he had the extraordinary vision to concern
himself with the quality of life of senior citizens. Franks focus
on promoting creativity throughout the lifecycle via the arts will likely
resonate with those concerned with human physical, psychological, and
spiritual well being. His work resonates with those who incorporate the
expressive arts in their work with clients.
Frank has an exceptionally long list of accomplishments.
Just a few of his many achievements are the following:
In 1965, Frank conceived and organized the
Golden Age Art Exhibition, an annual event, an off shoot of which still
takes place today 40 years
later, in which seniors who are artists exhibit their work.
The following year, 1966, he helped found the Senior
Concert Orchestra of New York, which is made up of retired, professional
musicians who conduct free concerts throughout New York City, including
an annual performance at Carnegie Hall. The orchestra has recorded at
least seven albums for CBS. Leonard Bernstein conducting the New York
Philharmonic and the Mormon Tabernacle choir was included on one of
those recordings.
In 1967, he established the Senior Recreation and Cultural
Council of Greater New York to promote art and extend cultural opportunities
to senior citizens. This Council is a unique cultural organization that
has attracted national attention.
In 1969, he received a Key to the City from NYC Mayor
John Lindsey. And in 1970, New York State Governor, Nelson Rockefeller,
bestowed upon him a gubernatorial commendation.
In 1978, Mr. Jankovitz earned his Master of Arts degree
at Columbia Universitys Teachers College in New York City.
In 2004, as stated previously, his generous support allowed
Fielding Graduate University to launch this Creative Longevity and Wisdom
Initiative.
In 2005, Frank Jankovitz was awarded the Doctorate
of Humane Letters from the Santa Barbara Graduate Institute for his
life of community service and commitment to improve the lives of others.
