George E. Vaillant, M.D. Honored With Outstanding Researcher Award

July 14, 2005 - Fielding Graduate University presented Dr. George Vaillant with the school’s first Creative Longevity and Wisdom Outstanding Researcher Award. During Fielding’s 2005 summer session Vaillant lectured to the community in a talk entitled “Adult Development or What can 75 year olds do better than 30 year olds,” and participated in a seminar with faculty, students and alumni who offered comments on his work. Vaillant’s 45-year career includes a plethora of honors, awards and publications in the field of human development, drug and alcohol addiction.

A Lifetime of Honors and Achievements
Dr. Vaillant is a Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and the Department of Psychiatry, Brigham and Women's Hospital. He has spent his research career charting adult development and the recovery process of schizophrenia, heroin addiction, alcoholism, and personality disorder. Over the last 35 years, he has served as Director of the Study of Adult Development at the Harvard University Health Service.

This program has charted the lives of 824 men and women for over 60 years. His vita begins with a summary of prestigious appointments that have taken him from Boston to Palo Alto, and lectureships involving travel to most major U.S. cities, Canada, Ireland and Australia. A few highlights of the numerous honors and fellowships received by Vaillant during his career, include the Foundations Fund Prize for Research in Psychiatry (1984) from the American Psychiatric Association, the Strecker Award from the Institute of Pennsylvania Hospital (1979), the Burlingame Award from The Institute for Living, and the Jellinek Award (1991) for research in alcoholism. Most recently he has twice (1995, 2001) received research prizes from the International Psychogeriatric Society.

20 Years Later

This event marked the first anniversary of Fielding’s Creative Longevity and Wisdom Initiative directed by Fielding faculty member, Valerie Malhotra Bentz, PhD, and made possible through a generous grant from Dr. Frank Jankovitz. The initiative's focus is the promotion and support of research in support of creative aging through the pursuit of wisdom.
