I
am an HOD student and fellow of the Creative Longevity and Wisdom Initiative.
I created the multicultural poster of the Initiative and contributed to
the design and creation of the Initiative's website. I am currently working
on a DVD documenting the history of the Initiative for publicity purposes.
As an Asian-Latina-American woman with roots in the Chinese, Brazilian,
and American cultures, I negotiate multiple worldviews daily to make sense
of personal and professional experiences. I am fluent in Shanghais, Mandarin,
Cantonese, Portuguese, Spanish, and sometimes, English.
I hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance from the
University of Wisconsin at La Cross and an MBA from the California State
University at Fullerton. I use my experience as a former corporate executive
and graduate studies faculty to provide consulting services in business
communication, strategic planning, group and adult learning, leadership
skills development, quality process improvement, and multicultural competency
awareness.
In my quest to becoming a scholar-practitioner, I strive to heal myself
through family and art therapy and to create a new, integrated identity
as a result of that healing. I am an artist skilled in painting with oil,
acrylic, watercolor, and pastel and in pencil drawings. It is with the
holistic perspective of an artist that I approach understanding my contribution
to the scholarly literature.
For my doctoral research I am interested in studying
how certain cultural practices can affect the mental health of Asian American
descendants of foreign-born Asian parents. I hypothesize that some cultural
practices enforced by the parents create an oppressive family environment.
Children who are not prepared to function in the American socio-cultural
context because of a multiplicity of cultural values may experience mental
illnesses that can reduce their creativity, longevity and quality of life.
I hope to produce knowledge that will help bring healing to those who,
like me, struggle to understand their own identities.
