A dynamic alternative is
emerging. A multi-faceted and growing dialogue and civic engagement
movement is a promising development in North America and other parts
of the world. This movement has also grown internationally, often
referred to as deliberative and inclusionary practices.
Dialogue and civic engagement are becoming well-established as
a field of practice, with important implications for how we go
about our work in organizations, communities, and governments.
This emerging field includes an array of approaches to dialogue
and public engagement that offer promising ways of addressing
problems, encouraging constructive dialogue, enabling collaboration
and strengthening management.
By engaging people from diverse backgrounds in open, inclusive
dialogue, these new modes of engagement offer a vision of how
civic life should operate and how organizations can be more effective.
We invite you to join us as we continue to explore this important,
relevant new field.
This first-of-its-kind program provides an introduction to the
theory and practice of these new approaches that can be applied
in private organizations and public life.

These new approaches are far more sophisticated ways of grappling with complex public problems and collaborating with highly diverse social actors. They provide a hopeful set of intellectual and practical handles for many who seek to become effectively engaged. The future of our democracy will depend on whether we can deepen and extend such innovation to solve major problems and transform the way we do politics.
