The convergence of media, technology, communication, art
and science is transforming our world. New career opportunities abound.
New types of positions are emerging. Burgeoning media industries have
an accelerating need for capable media professionals, solutions architects,
and highly developed practitioners, including professional educators,
writers, producers, programmers, engineers, designers, directors, artists,
cinematographers, public relations, advertising and media communications,
IT and web specialists, who have the knowledge and perform with new, state-of-the-art
understanding of media effects.
Educational institutions need faculty and staff who understand
higher concepts in the media arts and sciences, the number of positions
in media arts is increasing and the use of media in eLearning, distributed
education, classroom learning and all facets of global education and training
is a 21st century area of specialization. Tools of the future are both
physical and intellectual. Individuals in all facets of educational leadership
and change must now understand and apply media effects in order to perform
successfully in the majority of the new and emerging occupational specialties.
The Concentration in Media Studies main focus is the study
of media effects, media and learning. Media Studies in the School of Educational
Leadership and Change embodies a focus on the understanding media and
learning, and is fundamental to a well-rounded program for teaching, learning
and administration in education, health services, commerce, entertainment
and public policy and administration. The degree is a Doctor of Education.
The Media Studies concentration is one of several concentrations that
may be combined and included in various ways in ones learning plan.
Students in the present program are university professors,
company CEOs, webmasters, software designers, teachers in various fields,
entertainment industry professionals, and professionals in various communication
disciplines.
EdD with a Concentration in Media Studies
To complete the Ed.D in the Educational Leadership and Change program
with a concentration in Media Studies, working with your mentor, you may
design your learning program around the following plan:
Eighty units via eight ten-unit Knowledge Areas are
included in three categories:
ELC Core (40 units)
ELC 751 Action-Oriented Research (10 units)
ELC 752 Leadership and Change (10 units)
ELC 753 Systems Thinking and Intervention (10 units)
ELC 769: Structural Inequality and Diversity (10 units)

Dependent on students credit evaluation and learning plan prepared
with his or her mentor.
To complete the Ed. D degree you must also complete
an additional 21 units in the following areas

It is a working list of various theories and areas of study (ologies)
that are included in the Fielding Graduate University concentrations in
Media Psychology and/or Media Studies. The list below is for purposes
of example and enumerates many of the theories in education and psychology
that may be applied to media. One purpose in providing this list is to
show the scope of subjects included in media studies, which is an emerging,
