Frequently Asked Questions
about MA-CEL |
Q. Is there a chance we can attend
summer school and speed up the process? [back
to list of questions]
A. Summer school is not endorsed in this intense program. First of
all, you need a place in which to apply your learning, and this may not
be possible for everyone during the summer. More important is the fact
that you, as an educator, need time off for good behavior in the summer.
Also, many LC participants use this time to work on capstone development,
readings, and other things that will support their learning during the
rest of the program.
Q. How are grades determined?
[back to
list of questions]
A. Grades will be focused by your baseline when entering the program,
how you are applying your learning in your classroom, and the impact this
has on improving learning for your pre-K-16 students.
You will create performance assessments based on the National Board of
Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS), California State Teaching Standards,
LC standards, the MA-CEL framework, plus personal and school district
expectations. These become the best statements of what it means to be
a peak performing professional. Based on this and your study about grading,
the LC will set levels of expertise that will be translated into the traditional
grading system.
Q. Because of integrated curriculum,
how will transcripts look? [back
to list of questions]
A. The spiraled curriculum will not be visible on your transcript.
The official transcripts in the LC will show the same titles as those
of the on-campus program. Through a unique study of the tools called "grades"
and "grading practices", you will 1) expand your understanding
of this historical, dependable method of sorting and ranking, 2) redefine
methods and rationale for reporting learning achievement, and 3) establish
how to grade for the following courses:
Semester 1 (9 units)
EDU 553 - Community, Shared Values, and Learning (3 units)
EDU 554 - Understanding Differences: Valuing, Honoring, Supporting, and
Celebrating Diversity (3 units)

Q. How much does the program cost?
[back to list of questions]
A. For tuition and fees for the PASC and Charter Schools Concentration,
see the Tuition
page. For a detailed list of other possible expenses, visit our Cost
of Education page.
Q. How will computer technology support
my learning experience with Fielding? [back
to list of questions]
A. You will have a Fielding email address and a FELIX (Fielding Education
Link and Information eXchange) account, Fielding Graduate University's
private home on the World Wide Web. FELIX provides a place for students,
facilitators and staff to meet between face-to-face meetings and have
discussions, ask questions, and access resources. The discussions are
held in asynchronous forums so one does not have to be online at the same
time as others in order to participate. Within FELIX there are links to
Library Services, administrative services and academic information. Any
computer with Internet Access can be used. Netscape Navigator 4.7x and
6.0x and Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0x browsers are required.
