While students must demonstrate competence in all specified components of the curriculum, they are encouraged to build on strengths they already have, and to extend themselves into areas with which they are less familiar.  We never ask students to relearn areas in which they are already competent.  At the same time, we do not rely on the mere assertion of competence by students, we ask them to demonstrate it in writing or orally.
