From
the Director of Alumni Relations
Many organizations and boards look to volunteers to donate their
time, talent and treasure. Successful alumni programs
rely on the constituents to make all the difference, and I know
Fieldings program wouldnt be what it is without the
commitment and participation of so many generous graduates from
all of our programs.
A
terrific case in point comes from a band of energetic,
creative alumni from the School of HOD who, ever since their
graduations have been connected, available, and engaged in lots
of ways with Fielding. They provide us with insight, leadership,
financial support, constructive criticism, and encouragement throughout
the year, each year, because of their belief in Fielding and their
personal needs to remain a part of what the Fielding experience
broughtand still offersthem.
Knowing
that their school, HOD, was approaching its 25th anniversary in
2005, the band came together in mid-2004 to plan their
own reunion! I want to congratulate this group and all who participated
on the highly successful HOD
25th Alum Reunion
that took place in Santa Barbara immediately following the HOD
Winter Session in January. Special appreciation goes to lead organizer
Betty Downes, HOD 90, and to Walter Blanchard, faculty
Don Bushnell, Madeline Finnerty, Lois Hogan, Mike McElwee, faculty
Barbara Mink, Eileen Morgan, Christi Olson, Martha Sherman, Ilene
Wasserman, and Rob Williams. They knew what they wantedquality
time with one another and with faculty to learn, share, question,
play, collaborate and enjoyand they made it happen, nearly
entirely on their own (with some Fielding involvement!). They
made a big difference for the 45 alums who gathered for 2 daysjust
look
at the photos for proof. President Judy Kuipers, Provost Anna
DiStefano, Dean Charles McClintock, and Directors Anne Kratz,
DeAnne Taylor, and yours truly all had a great time participating
as well.
Each
academic program most likely has some needs the same as this group
of HOD alumni and some needs that are different, when it comes
to imagining and implementing a successful and exciting event.
If you want to organize something for your program, we will join
you in making it happen.
Warmly,
Cheri

First MA-CEL Graduates
Twenty-two MA-CEL graduates from Chico and Lancaster/Palmdale,
California celebrated with family and friends to honor the work
they accomplished during their two year degree program. Director
of this master's program in the School of Educational Leadership
and Change (ELC) Kathy Tiner-Sewell, PhD , told FANmail: "As
collaborative educational leaders they worked together as a community
of learners, supporting and encouraging one another with respect
and integrity. As action researchers, they looked at real issues
with real people. Now they are ready for new responsibilities
- their responsibility to the scholarly world, and to the world
of practice.
These
graduates are ready to work collaboratively in their communities
to facilitate learning and decision making, and to share their
understanding of the richness and value of diversity. These MA-CEL
graduates have changed lives - now they will change the system."
Congratulations to the first graduates of this program: Gene
Azparren, Thomas Baird, Ruth DeTro, Eleanore Fain, Susan Farris,
Peggy Franken, Shirley Harper, Helen Hutzler, Nancy Jensen, Julianna
Knittel, Jacqueline Lary, Johnnie Morgan, Michal Parker, Amy Riga,

Call for Proposals: Elizabeth Douvan Post-Doctoral Award for HOD
Alumni
Libby Douvan was a beloved faculty member of the HOD program for
19 years. A feminist scholar, Libby served on 131 committees,
co-facilitated the Michigan cluster of both PSY and HOD students
with her friend and colleague Jody Veroff, faculty emerita, and
inspired many students and faculty with her wit and intelligence.
In 2001, HOD alumnae Sue Lawley, Sonya Delgado, Martha Sherman,
Jodie Morrow, and Phyl Acadia and Provost Anna DiStefano honored
Libby upon her retirement with the creation of this award from
their donations. There have been 3 awards given out of $1000 each
to recipients Janja Lalich, Cynthia Barnes, and Jodie Morrow.
See the call
for proposals
for information about eligibility, applying for the award, and
the time frame. Proposals are due by May 5, 2005, and will be
announced at summer session July 23. Contact Anne Kratz, Director
of Development, if you would like to make a donation to the Libby
Douvan fund (akratz@fielding.edu or 805.898.2926).
