Update from the Director of Alumni Relations, Dilys Jones

Since my introduction to the Fielding community a few months ago, I've had the pleasure of meeting many alumni at summer sessions. The Psychology (PSY) and Human & Organization Development (HOD) events in Alexandria, VA were my first official outings; I was astonished to find that I could not differentiate students from alumni, nor from faculty! As the week progressed, my feelings of awe, wonder, admiration, and pride in the Fielding experience grew exponentially. Eight new graduates from the School of Psychology and 20 from Human & Organization Development were congratulated and welcomed as alumni at a celebratory breakfast hosted by President Judy Kuipers.

Then it was on to Tucson, Arizona where the Educational Leadership & Change (ELC) National Session had me awash with more emotion. Nine new graduates celebrated their doctoral achievement and their stories of determination, adversity and ultimate triumph moved everyone to tears. The perseverance, warmth, support, and community spirit reinforces my impression that Fielding is a dynamic, forward-thinking institution. I am proud to be a part of it and look forward to connecting with you and your regional bases in the months to come. The alumni dinner was held in a private room at Janos, an award-winning restaurant not far from the conference site, and we were delighted to reconnect with 6 additional HOD and PSY graduates who drove in from Scottsdale, Phoenix, and New Mexico to be with us. The evening was a great success, and the high point was when everyone joined in singing birthday wishes to Provost Anna DiStefano.

At the beginning of September, the Organization Management & Development (OMD) master's program held its annual session in Santa Barbara, California, and I was on hand to welcome more new members into the alumni community. Now we are in the midst of preparing for the January 2007 winter sessions. We hope you will come to Santa Barbara for the alumni events. I would like to meet you and hear how we can strengthen and support the alumni community. If you would like to become more involved, the Alumni Council will be seeking candidates to fill vacancies. Are you interested in putting your skills, experience and energy to work as a volunteer? We want to hear from you!

Best wishes for continued success in all you do.

On Friday, July 14th Mike Goldstein and his wife, Jinny, hosted a dinner reception for alumni in their Washington, D.C. home. We were pleased to learn that some of the 22 alumni guests drove some distance to join the party. Forty people were transported by bus from the hotel in Alexandria to the Goldstein's lovely brownstone a few blocks from the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. It provided a wonderful venue for alumni to reconnect and strengthen their ties to Fielding. A surprise performance by Morgan (Eileen Morgan, HOD 95), accompanied on the piano by HOD Dean Charles McClintock added to the evening's enjoyment. We greatly appreciate Mike and Jinny's hospitality.

HOD Alumni: Apply Now for the $1,000 Libby Douvan Award

Applications are now being accepted exclusively from HOD alumni for the 2006-07 Elizabeth Douvan Post Doctoral Award. The annual $1,000 "Libby Grant" honors the spirit and memory of its namesake. The award is offered to individuals whose performance, product, or process benefits their professional development and the human and organization development community in general.

Prior recipients represent the arts, academia, youth programming, organizations, publishing and most recently, longevity programming. The recipients embody Libby's values and Fielding's principles. Last year's joint beneficiaries, Suzanne Baer, HOD 04, and Bo Tep, HOD 04, used the award to plan and conduct the 3-day "Illuminate Your Life" retreat that focused on human development in the second half of life.

For more information on how to apply please contact Dilys Jones, via alumnirelations@fielding.edu.
The deadline for applications is Monday, October 16, 2006.

PSY Alumni: Introduce friends or colleagues to Fielding via
the Adele & Louis Osherson Fellowships

What better way for our alumni to share the Fielding experience than by telling folks about an (almost) all-expenses paid week at a Fielding winter session? The Alonso Center, part of the School of Psychology, has designed a fellowship for mid-career individuals that support professional development through study of psychodynamic theory and technique application. The Osherson Fellowships are open to clinical social workers, pastoral counselors, educators, non-clinical doctorates, lawyers, visual artists, journalists and writers; tuition, lodging, and travel costs are paid. We ask you to share this opportunity with people in your circle by directing them to the Alonso Center website.

FREE ACCESS toFull-text Article Databases

If you are unsure about which online library databases are available to alumni, please visit the Library Home Page for up-to-date information. (No FELIX login required).

Our librarians report that alumni conducted 123 independent searches in August 2006. The breakdown was as follows:

  • 4 accessed National Newspaper Abstracts;
  • 91 accessed ProQuest Education Journals, and read 65 abstracts;
  • 31 accessed ProQuest Psychology Journals and read 9 abstracts; and
  • 25 accessed Research Library and read 31 articles.

We hope these online library resources will continue to be useful to you. Enjoy!

Beth Fisher-Yoshida, HOD 00
Fielding Alumni Council (FAC) Chair

Beth joined the FAC in April 2004 and is serving as its chair for this year. She became involved with the council because she wanted to "give back" to Fielding in a practical way. She embraces the concept that Fielding is a lifelong learning experience and sees the council as a mechanism for strengthening the relationship between alumni and the university. As Chair of the council, Beth would like to see alumni more engaged with the university and believes that the Alumni Summit scheduled for 2008 will provide the impetus for this.

Beth considers herself a lifelong learner, and found her three-and-a-half years in the HOD program a pivotal experience, as she built a framework in which she could apply her views and diversity and satisfy her need to develop a theoretical base as a scholar practitioner. She graduated from the School of Human Organization & Development in January 2000.

Since then, Beth has been expanding her New Jersey-based business, FYI Fisher-Yoshida International, an organization that specializes in consulting, training, coaching in conflict resolution, leadership development, team building, communication, and performance management. In addition, Beth is the Associate Director of the International Center for Cooperation and Conflict Resolution at Teachers College, Columbia University. Beth has two daughters, Ria and Aya, and is married to Malick Smith.

Thelma A. Jackson, ELC 02
Fielding Alumni Council Member and Chair of Strategic Planning Steering Committee

Thelma, a member of the Fielding Alumni Council (FAC) since April 2004, has recently become well-known to the Fielding community as the chair of the Strategic Planning Steering Committee that evaluated and implemented ideas, listened to constituents, and revised the university's 5-year plan over a period of 10 months. The final draft is now under review by the President's Leadership Team, prior to being presented to the Board of Trustees for approval.

She is passionate about defining ways in which alumni may develop a vested interest in Fielding's future and giving back to the University. Thelma believes that every graduate should consider publishing their dissertation and presenting their research at national sessions. She is eager to see alumni-focused offerings at Fielding events. She is a key participant to the FAC Planning Committee for the Alumni Summit being planned for June 2008 with the goal of bringing together alumni from all schools and programs.

A product of the segregated schools in Alabama, she has 28 years of experience in education change initiatives, restructuring and reform, equity and diversity, policy-making, cultural competence and parental/community involvement. Thelma is the Owner/President of Foresight Consultants, an educational consulting firm in Olympia, Washington. Over the years she has received numerous awards for advocacy and community service in education. Thelma is well-known around the halls and hearing rooms of the Washington State Legislature and is a frequent speaker and highly sought-after conference presenter. Her most recent honor is being listed in the upcoming 2007 Edition of Marquis' Who's Who in America. She has been married to her college sweetheart Nat for 40 years, and they have two daughters, a son, and four grandchildren.
