FANmail Newsletter

December 2006

Greetings Fielding Alumni,

We received wonderful feedback on the new and updated Alumni Network Web pages; thank you. We hope that you will come to see the Alumni Home Page as the primary resource for alumni-related activities, news, and opportunities. We are constantly adding and updating, so be sure to check back often. If you have not yet taken the tour, please do so and feel free to share your thoughts on how we can expand the site further. Please keep in mind that these pages are dedicated to you, the Fielding alumni. Information related to programs, faculty or clusters will continue to reside in those segments of Fielding’s Web site. Hyperlinks to relevant portions of these sections will be created as needed.

Some of you mentioned that the last issue of FANmail clogged your computer, so I think it’s only fair to warn you that this will most likely be the size and format for future issues. Please consider using mail filters to post large files into a Bulk Folder or select the option that will allow you to view FANmail without the graphics. For quick and easy access, the most recent issue is always posted on the Web site, along with archival copies.

Once we have successfully navigated the multiple activities scheduled for January 2007, I shall begin contacting alumni in various geographic regions in order to start building and strengthening the Fielding Alumni Network across the United States. If you lead or participate in an informal alumni cluster, please share your group’s information with me so that it may be posted on the web, with the newly-identified affiliate groups. Your meeting dates may also be included in the quarterly issues of FANmail. I’m recruiting enthusiastic volunteers to assist me in this effort; if you are interested, please complete the form on our Web site and email it to alumnirelations@fielding.edu. Thank you for your continuing interest in all things Fielding.

Warmest wishes to you and yours for a wonderful holiday season and prosperous New Year!

Celebrating Fielding Scholar-Practitioners

On Saturday, November 11th, almost 70 Los Angeles-based alumni, students, and friends gathered for a social evening at the beautiful home of Trustee, Pat Palleschi and her husband, Garry Hart. Guests drifted easily between the patio with an ocean view and the delicious spread located indoors, reconnecting with each other and visiting with President Judy Kuipers. Small social groups lingered in comfortable rooms, sharing Fielding experiences, exchanging business cards, and expanding their networks. Our guests expressed appreciation of the graciousness with which the Fielding community was made welcome; we are fortunate indeed, to count Pat and Garry among our close friends and strong supporters. (Pictured right: President Judy Kuipers, and hosts Pat Palleschi and Garry Hart.)

Getting to Know the Fielding Alumni Council

Irvin R. Clark , ELC 03

Incoming Chair, Fielding Alumni Council

In 2004 Irvin was selected to represent the School of Educational Leadership & Change (ELC) on the Fielding Alumni Council (FAC) and will assume the position of Council Chair at the annual meeting in March 2007. He credits Fielding for the opportunity to maintain his identity while evolving with his educational program, rather than attempting to fit him into a cookie-cutter mold. “So much about what I am, is due to the unique perspectives and life experiences that the Fielding process exposed me too,” he says, “and serving on the council is one way I can show my support.”

Irvin wisely completed his undergraduate degree in political science before signing on as a defensive lineman with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. A severe knee injury brought his professional football career to an abrupt end. He joined the student affairs administrative team at Savannah State University and coached football, while studying for his Master’s in Public Administration.

Over the next ten years, Irvin held increasingly responsible positions, and attained his doctorate in education in 2003.  In November 2006, Irvin was promoted to the position of Associate Vice President for Student Affairs at Savannah State University. Congratulations on this appointment!

Irvin sits on the Savannah Impact Program Citizen Board and the Savannah Regional Youth Detention Center Advisory Board among others, and constantly applies the philosophies and insights learned at Fielding to address the challenges facing youth in today’s society. He is the proud father of Edmund, 9, and Isabel, 6, and serves as president of their elementary school’s P.T.A.

Glory Fox Dierker, PSY 01

Outgoing FAC Member, Chair of the Fielding Alumni Summit Planning Committee

In March 2001 Glory graduated from Fielding’s Clinical Psychology program, and just a few months later had to call upon all the knowledge and skills acquired in her 15-year career as a psychotherapist to address the terrorizing events of 9/11, anthrax poisoning and sniper attacks faced by her community. Glory is the executive director and owner of The Family Center, her private practice in Washington, D.C. and the re-evaluation of life and its priorities brought on by these traumatic events, prompted her to accept a position on the FAC in 2004. As she puts it, “I missed the direct connection with Fielding, and wanted to renew my relationship with its core values of social activism, justice and peace.”

Since 2005, Glory has been collaborating with FAC colleagues Thelma Jackson, ELC 02, and Dan Distelhorst
HOD 95
, to conceptualize, design and deliver a signature event that would bring together alumni from all three schools in the continued lifelong learning environment that embodies the spirit of Fielding. The purpose of the Fielding Alumni Summit, scheduled for June 2008, is to support the alumni body in connecting and reconnecting; networking across disciplines; and creating professional development and multi-discipline collaboration toward actions on common causes. Even though Glory’s term of office on the Fielding Alumni Council ends in March 2007, she will continue to volunteer her time and effort to the successful execution of Alumni Summit.

Glory and Bob, her husband of 39 years, live in McLean, Virginia. They have three children, Annie, who was married in an English, 14th Century church at the beginning of December; Maggie, who recently followed in her father’s footsteps and took the Bar examination; and Bo, a successful musician and entrepreneur.

Ellen B. Urell, ELC 05

Joins Alumni Council

In October 2006 Ellen was appointed to fill the vacant Educational Leadership & Change position on the Alumni Council. Ellen recently completed a two-year term as president of the Emma Willard School Alumnae Association Council, representing that body to the Board of Trustees. We look forward to her sharing the knowledge gained from this endeavor with the FAC. She is a volunteer team leader for New York Cares, and mobilizes and leads teams on nonprofit service projects in the city. Since 1995, Ellen has worked at Geller & Company in New York City, a financial outsourcing solutions provider, and currently holds the positions of project manager and business manager, Family Office Services division.

SAVE THE DATE!
FAC member, Denise Humphrey, PSY 03 will host a reception with President Kuipers in Dallas, Texas on Saturday, March 10, 2007.

Strategic Direction 4.0: Alumni Engagement and Development

By Thelma A. Jackson, Ed.D. ELC 02

My fellow alumni:

As many of you know I was selected to represent the Alumni Council on the Strategic Planning Steering Committee, and was honored when President Kuipers requested that I serve as the committee’s Chairperson. It therefore gives me great pleasure to report to you that the issues identified by the Fielding Alumni Council as top priorities, are reflected in the 5-Year Strategic Plan recently adopted by the Board of Trustees at their meeting in October.  The key actions include development of FAN, the alumni organization, greater recognition and inclusion of alumni, the addition of the Datatel Active Alumni program, and increase participation through the unique Alumni Summit Event, which will bring together graduates from all schools and programs.

It is significant that the board acknowledges the importance of alumni to the future of Fielding, and has elevated the section related to alumni issues to a specific strategic direction with its own goal: Alumni Engagement and Development. Strategic Direction 4.0 aims to expand, nurture and support professional growth and career-development of the alumni and develop and expand the Fielding Alumni Network organization. The complete Plan may be accessed on FELIX, along with other action steps related to the alumni community.

I have been invited to be part of the work group charged with further developing Goal 4.0 for implementation, and the Alumni Council shall continue to work with Fielding’s administration in monitoring the progress for the duration of the
5-year Plan.  I greatly appreciated the opportunity to give back to the university in this manner. The experience has resulted in me becoming a better-informed alumna and a more responsible representative of the alumni community.

R. John Hoover, PhD, HOD 97- Elected to Fielding Council

In October 2006, John was elected to represent the School of Human & Organization Development on the Fielding Council. Following 13 years executive experience with Walt Disney Productions and McGraw-Hill, John has enjoyed a successful career as a bestselling business author and an organizational behavior and communications specialist. John is the author of How to Work for an Idiot: Survive & Thrive without Killing Your Boss (2003) and his latest book Bullwinkle on Business: Motivational Secrets of a Chief Executive Moose will be available in March 2007.

John lives in Milburn, New Jersey and was recently hired as an HOD adjunct faculty member to design and teach an online lifelong learning course in publishing; it commences in April 2007.

The Fielding Council is a vital part of shared governance for the Fielding Graduate University and plays an important role in the development and maintenance of the alignment among faculty, students, alumni, staff, administration and the Board of Trustees. It works to assist the president and the Leadership Teams by engaging in dialogue and making recommendations to the president with regard to the strategic directions of the institution.

New Program
How to Write a Book Proposal that Sells

This is the new program developed by Lifelong Learning for the School of Human & Organization Development. Designed with Fielding alumni in mind, this eight-week online course will be offered for the first time beginning April 30, 2007. Registrants in the course will learn how to identify the secrets to approaching the ideal publisher, sponsoring editor, and/or agent to champion their idea for a commercially published book. Learners come away with the ability to create a document that will make a compelling case for why a commercial publisher should offer them a publishing contract.

John Hoover, a Fielding alumnus, is teaching the course. John has published over a dozen books with Career Press, Harper Collins, John Wiley and Sons, McGraw-Hill, and St. Martin’s Press. His books, including a New York Times bestseller, have been translated into 15 languages. All of Hoover’s commercially published books were sold on a book proposal and contracted before they were written.

As an added bonus, all book proposals developed in the course will be read by a major New York literary agency. We expect the course to fill up quickly, so register now online.

A Note of Appreciation to our Generous Alumni Community

This is the time of year when I feel particularly grateful for the wonderful support we receive all year from our alumni. So many of you are participating in the life of Fielding or have made generous gifts to the 30th Anniversary Campaign—or both! It’s clear that you care about Fielding and its future. Your involvement, commitment, and support help make a Fielding experience possible for future students, and help Fielding continue to offer a needed alternative in graduate education. Thank you, from
all of us.
