Many of you remain connected with Fielding colleagues and continue to gather in your area. I want to learn more about your meetings as we move forward with our outreach plans; but I don’t want to re-invent the wheel. Help us learn what is already in place by visiting the Regional Alumni Representatives section on the Alumni Network home page. If you are the contact, please confirm that you intend to carry on as the group champion. If you lead an alumni gathering and you are not listed, please complete the Volunteer Application Form, include information on your group’s activities, and send it to alumnirelations@fielding.edu. A thriving FAN network depends on volunteers; a big thank you to those folks who indicated an interest in starting an alumni group in their locale. We are developing a qualitative survey that will ask our graduates how best regional alumni groups may address your professional needs and personal wishes. Watch for a postcard in your mailbox. I look forward to meeting more of you face to face at summer sessions in Kansas City, MO, and at the ELC National Session in Tucson, AZ. These events will be a milestone of sorts, as it will be a full year since I joined the Fielding Graduate University. The warmth, patience, and support you have shown as I skidded around this learning curve are greatly appreciated! Warm wishes for a pleasant spring. |

Fielding Alumni Council Retreat
All ten members of the 2007-08 Alumni Council and outgoing chair, Beth Fisher-Yoshida, convened in Santa Barbara on Wednesday, March 28, 2007. Over the next four days, they met with President Judy Kuipers, her leadership team, and attended individual meetings with the deans and associate deans of each school. The council gained a current picture of Fielding’s educational direction and programming challenges; they then considered ways alumni can assist in strengthening the educational effort. The FAC is committed to finding ways for graduates to make contributions to the community by staying connected, being involved, and participating at many different levels. On the last day of the retreat, Irvin Clark (ELC 03) was inducted as chair, and new members Vassanthi Valoo (PSY 06), Kathy Geller (HOD 05), and Bryon Noon (ELC 05) were elected to three-year terms of office. To learn more about the members of the Alumni Council, please follow this link http://www.fielding.edu/alumni/roster.htm . |

President's Reception in Dallas, TX
On Saturday evening, March 10, 2007, Alumni Council member Denise Humphrey (PSY 03) hosted a reception for President Judy Kuipers and the Fielding community at her home in Dallas. The informal social setting made it possible for the 20 students, alumni and guests representing all schools and programs to reconnect and socialize. The guests enjoyed the multi-disciplinary exchanges they had with one another and expressed their interest in re-energizing the Dallas Alumni Network. If you would like to connect with this group, please send an email to alumnirelations@fielding.edu. Congratulations to Deb Budding (NEPSY 04) and Dana Chidakel (NEPSY 01) on receiving their board certification from the American Board of Neuropsychology Professionals.

Fielding Community Council Update Leslie E. Ellis (PSY 91) was elected to the Fielding Community Council at the beginning of 2007. In March, she met fellow alumni representatives Jody Hironaka-Juteau (ELC 99), R. John Hoover (HOD 97), and the alumni director at the council’s semi-annual meeting in Santa Barbara. They were asked what Fielding might do to reconnect with the Fielding Alumni Network (FAN): Leslie hopes to identify a mechanism that will bring PSY alumni back to session; she believes that making CEUs available to alumni is a potential solution. Jody would like to see more opportunities for collaborative research projects across the schools and programs.
John believes that extended services offered to alumni are important. He suggests that the university focus on our alumni’s professional interests when developing FAN projects. |

The Smith Richardson Foundation’s Domestic Public Policy Program seeks to support the work of the next generation of public policy researchers and analysts. In 2007, the Foundation will award at least three research grants in the amount of $60,000 each to individuals who are interested in conducting research and writing on domestic public policy issues. Grantees are expected to produce a book or an article suitable for publication in a peer-reviewed journal. The grant can be used to cover the salary costs of the researcher and to underwrite research costs, such as travel, research assistance, and data acquisition. Each grant will be paid directly to, and should be administered by, the institution at which the researcher works. For more information please visit their Web site www.srf.org. Alumna LaNelle Ford (PSY 78)and her daughters, Linda Ford (HOD 92)and Kathryn Ford, MD, created the LaNelle & Dennis Ford Scholarship in memory of Dennis Ford—husband, father, and longtime educator. Leadership gifts from the Ford family, and contributions from friends and Fielding community members made the first award possible at Winter Session 2007. The Ford Scholarship is dedicated to supporting talented female doctoral students residing in Texas, and the first recipient is Beverly Stevenson (HOD-A) whose research explores interracial family histories of persons of African descent. |
