What Is The Fielding Alumni Summit? [back to top]
The Fielding Alumni Summit is the first, all-school alumni conference. It is being held in Tucson, Arizona, on June 26-29, 2008. Up to 60 Alumni from the Master's and Doctoral programs of the Schools of Educational Leadership and Change (ELC), Human and Organization Development (HOD) and Psychology (PSY) will collaborate across disciplines to discuss interests and to plan for actions that will address local and global issues.

  • Want to connect and reconnect with other alumni
  • Seek personal and professional development.

How Will the Summit Be Organized? [back to top]
Imagine participating in a program that is not about passive learning, but rather draws on the expertise of attendees with the goal of action to make a difference in out world. To do this we will assemble in small interdisciplinary teams, and work together on projects of our own choosing (research, social action, publishing, community change).
We are limited only by our imaginations.

How Will The Summit Be Organized? [back to top]
We will use a self-organizing process to assemble small interdisciplinary groups who will work together on projects of their own choosing to create action plans that they will implement together after the event.

Here's how it works:
1. The whole group gathers in a single room.
2. Anyone who wants to advocate an action project can do so by contacting the organizers prior to the event, or simply speak up in the moment. For example, if someone would like to create a group to discuss how to improve Fielding; start an emergency response team; found a leadership academy; or mentor at risk youth, they would stand up and call out that group project to begin.
3. A large sign is quickly made for each person/topic
4. After everyone, who wants to do so, has been heard, the various advocates take the signs to various parts of the room.
5. Others then "vote with their feet" by moving to join whatever group interests them.
6. We check to make sure there is at least one representative from each school in each self-selected group, adjusting groups as needed.
7. The groups go off to begin their work. Groups are totally self-managing.

Participants have the choice, at all times, to work with whatever group, or groups, interests them. They can stay with one group; "butterfly" between groups; or even start new groups as time goes on.

What Is Expected Of Me? [back to top]
To ensure the Summit's success, we ask each participant to commit to the following:

  • Bring excitement, good cheer and a commitment to action when you attend the Summit.
  • Fully participate in the project of your choosing. The Summit is not just about visioning what "could be," it's about making it happen.
  • Contribute to a progress report on your project.
  • Be open to "cross-pollination" (i.e., interdisciplinary discourse).

What Will The Results Be? [back to top]
The long-term results will depend on the type of project you and your team decide to undertake! The short-term goal of the Summit is to plant the seeds for innovative, action-based projects as well as encourage a sense of community across all three schools. Publishable work for you and your team, and increased visibility of Fielding may also result.

How Are Projects Created Across Large Geographical Areas? [back to top]
Participants are challenged to design projects that can be implemented collaboratively from anywhere. While there is no expectation that registrants have to continue their work after the Summit, we hope they will carry away the energy and excitement to want to implement their project with their team after the event.

Will There Be Evening Activities? [back to top]
The night time is all about celebrating, remembering, socializing, and having fun together!

On Friday at 8:00 p.m., we will showcase amazing talents in the Alumni Summit Talent Show. All alumni are encouraged and welcome to perform!

To sign up, or for more information, please contact Denise Humphrey (PSY 03) via email drdhumphrey@yahoo.com or by phone 972.386.7381. Denise, a concert pianist herself, seeks a "cast" who will offer music, dance, drama, poetry readings, and improvisational performances.

The Saturday night dinner is a celebration of our achievements, followed by music and activities.

Will There Be Other Things To Do? [back to top]
Thanks to local alumnus Don Chatfield (HOD 99) we have planned a number of amazing, optional conference activities that include golf, yoga/qi gong, hiking, a jeep tour, and museum trips! We invite you and your family to use this as a time to relax and take advantage of all Arizona has to offer.Click here for details on the optional conference activities.

Farewell Fun by the Pool: Sunday, 12 Noon
Grab some lunch from the Gold Room restaurant, which overlooks the main resort pool, and join other alumni, friends, and family members for a last chance to chat with Fielding colleagues before beginning your journey home.
