Psychodynamic Faculty & Alumni Reunion
October 24-26, 2008 Cambridge, MA

Our Mission
The Alonso Center is committed to deepening people's awareness of themselves and the world. Psychodynamic theory emphasizes several important principles that can enrich our lives.

  • Motives and wishes that are outside conscious awareness help shape our experience, in our personal lives or in the organizations and communities in which we work and learn. When people enter into conversations and relationships with greater self-awareness, they can be creative, intimate, and less afraid.

  • Early relationships with significant others have enduring influences on our later adult relationships. Understanding the influences of the past on the present can enrich and enliven our family and work relationships.

  • The therapeutic relationship is a vital component of psychotherapy. A special contribution of the Center is our focus on the therapeutic relationship, at a time when it is severly threatened in our health system, through support for psychodynamic theory and research and training. Psychodynamic theory and therapy are often referred to as the "talking therapies" and the tenets are equally applicable to education, and the business world, politics, and family life as well.

Over the past years, we have seen the importance of people coming together, having a chance to talk about what has happened to them, and telling their stories. The Alonso Center brings together psychologists and psychiatrists, educators, organizational development experts, and the general public to strengthen our understanding of and support for adaptive, resilient relationships in human life.

Center Activities The Alonso Center fulfills its mission through:
  • Sponsorship of community events such
    as the January 2003 Symposium, Life
    Along the Hyphen: Ethnicity and Identity in Work and Family Life;
  • Special lectures and discussions by
    distinguished scholars open to the public. Recent events include well- received community lectures by Professor Anne Cheng from the University of California, Berkeley, Dr. Vamik Vokan from the University of Virginia, acclaimed author and therapist Dr. Irvin Yalom, and Dr. Kim Leary from the Harvard Medical School;
  • Intensive training for students and mental health professionals;
  • Cross discipline collaboration and training with colleagues from corporate and other communities;
  • Scholarship of Alonso Scholars from minority backgrounds at Fielding Graduate University; and
  • Continuing education seminar.
